How to Make Smoked Sausage and Potatoes in the Air Fryer

Here is a brief overview of how this simple smoked sausage and potato recipe comes together. For the full recipe including all measurements, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  1. Prep your ingredients. Cut baby red potatoes into bit sized pieces and soak in water for 30 minutes. While the potatoes soak, prepare the smoked sausage by slicing it into ½ inch thick slices. After the potatoes have soaked for 30 minutes, dry them well.
  2. Preheat the air fryer. This is an important part of any air fryer recipe. You will need the air fryer at 400 degrees for the potatoes and 380 degrees for the smoked sausage.
  3. Season the potatoes. While he air fryer heats up, season the potatoes with olive oil, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning and smoked paprika. Stir to combine.
  4. Cook the potatoes. Add the potatoes to the air fryer and air fry at 400 degrees for 18-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are crispy and brown. Remove the potatoes, cover them with foil and cook the smoked sausage.
  5. Cook the smoked sausage. Add smoked sausage slices to the air fryer, then air fry at 380 degrees for 8 minutes.

Tips for the Best Air Fryer Smoked Sausage and Potatoes

Once the potatoes and smoked sausage are cooked to perfection, transfer them to a serving dish. Here are some tips and tricks to help you make the perfect air-fried potatoes and smoked sausage:

  • Use baby potatoes – they will cook faster and I personally prefer the texture of them when they are air fried. You can use russet potatoes, but make sure to cut them into bite sized pieces for faster, more even cooking.
  • Don’t overcrowd the basket – air needs to be able to circulate in an air fryer for it to work its magic. Cook in batches if needed.
  • Try different seasonings – paprika, garlic powder, or cayenne pepper are great options to add to the smoked sausage while it cooks.
Do I need to soak the potatoes?

Soaking the potatoes in water before cooking them helps to remove some of the excess starch on the surface which results in a crispier texture. While you do not have to soak the potatoes, if time allows, it is worth it.

Storing and Reheating Leftovers

Store any leftover sausage and potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat the portion you plan to eat in your air fryer at 350 degrees for 2-3 minutes until heated through.
