Steak Burrito Ingredients

Here are the basics that make up a classic burrito. Read more on the ingredients below, including my recipes to make them yourself from scratch!

  • Tortillas: These are the “wrappers” for your burritos. Burrito-sized flour tortillas are best because they can hold more fillings and are easier to roll up without tearing.
  • Steak: What is a steak burrito without steak? Steak is the main protein in steak burritos, providing a hearty and flavorful filling. You can use different cuts of steak such as flank steak, skirt steak, or sirloin, depending on your preference. I have a great recipe for making steak for burritos in the air fryer.
  • Veggies: Veggies add freshness, texture, and flavor to your burritos. Common veggie fillings include sliced bell peppers, onions, lettuce, and tomatoes. You can also add extras like avocado (hello, guacamole), black beans, or pinto beans. Scroll down for the perfect veggies.
  • Cheese: Shredded cheese adds richness and melts into the filling, helping to hold everything together. Common choices include cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a Mexican cheese blend. Grate it from a block rather than buying pre-shredded cheese for best melting and flavor.
  • Salsas and sauces: Salsas and sauces add moisture and flavor to the burritos. You can use store-bought options like salsa verde, salsa roja, or chipotle sauce, or make your own homemade salsa or sauce for a personalized touch.

How to Make Steak Burritos

Variations and Tips

  • Don’t overfill. Distribute the fillings evenly down the center of each tortilla to ensure a balanced flavor in every bite. Avoid overfilling to prevent the burritos from bursting open.
  • Roll Tight: Roll the burritos tightly to encase the fillings securely. Tuck in the sides as you roll to prevent any fillings from escaping.
  • Make a steak burrito bowl. Skip the tortilla and use rice to make a burrito bowl. Top with your favorite toppings. This is a great option to meal prep for lunches for the week.

Storing and Freezing Leftovers

If you are meal prepping for the week or have leftover burrito ingredients, I recommend storing them in separate containers in the refrigerator. Warm the portions of steak, vegetables, and rice you will use and build a fresh burrito.

If you want to store a leftover burrito, wrap it tightly with foil and keep it in the refrigerator for up to two days. You can also freeze burritos! Build your burrito, cover tightly twice with foil, and store in the freezer for up to three months. Read more on reheating burritos below.

How to Reheat a Burrito

With these simple steps, you can enjoy a warm and tasty burrito whenever you crave it, whether it’s leftover from yesterday’s dinner or straight from the freezer.

  • Oven method: Wrap the burrito in aluminum foil, leaving one end open for steam to escape. Place the wrapped burrito on a baking sheet and heat in the oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until heated through.
  • Microwave Method: For a quick option, place the unwrapped burrito on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave on high for 1-2 minutes, depending on the strength of your microwave. To ensure even heating, you can cover the burrito with a damp paper towel while microwaving.
  • Skillet Method: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Place the burrito in the skillet and cook for a few minutes on each side until warmed through and the tortilla is slightly crispy.
